Brief info

For twenty years, Dr. Helmut Schnurer was Director General for Waste Management at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment in Bonn and Berlin. During this period, he succeeded in shifting waste management and technology from landfilling to an environmentally safe and integrated concept, consisting of a high degree of recycling for many organic and inorganic waste streams, as well as safe energy recovery from non-recyclable waste. This new system significantly increased the nation’s contribution to climate protection.

Together with other like-minded countries in Europe, corresponding new regulations have been adopted by the European Union, which have become mandatory for all EU member states.

After his retirement, Dr. Schnurer has advised several European countries on adopting standards and regulations on waste management and environmental protection. He has also worked internationally for the EU, the OECD, and the United Nations Environmental Program.

Dr. Schnurer has a degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and a Doctorate from TUM. Before joining the Federal Ministry he worked on scientific research projects in Germany, several other European countries, and the United States.
