Tell Congress:
Pass legislation that stops landfilling of Municipal Solid and similar waste by 2030.
Untreated still reactive waste produces methane a Greenhouse Gas that according to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is 80 times more damaging than CO2.
Landfills also produce a number of other harmful emissions that are also released into the atmosphere. Landfill leachate contains many forever toxics that can’t be properly removed.
The true environmental and economic costs are not included in landfilling, hindering viable alternatives to be implemented.
We need to replace landfilling with an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS).
When we stop landfilling of municipal and similar wastes we open the door to better more sustainable resource management and move towards a circular economy.
